What is Teen Patti?
Teen Patti (तीन पत्ती or three cards in English), is a card game from India and is widely known in the region of South Asia. Also called the Indian Poker, flush, or flash, the game takes its influences from traditional poker.
Gameplay
First, a dealer is chosen randomly among the players and the cards are dealt clockwise as the players take turns around the table. The primary objective of the game is to have the best three-card hand. Each player either have to put additional bet into the table to stay in the game or bet nothing and fold.
Three cards are dealt, the boot is automatically deducted to the players and added to the pot. Players have the option to leave their cards at the table, this is called playing blind. They may also look at the cards and play as seen. Blind players may look at their cards anytime of the game and become a seen player.
Betting Rules
At the start of the game, the current stake is the minimum bet. The amount players have to bet in order to stay in the game depends on the current stake and whether they are playing blindly or seen.
Blind Players
- If the player before you is seen, you must bet at least half of the current stake or bet the current stake.
- If the player before you is blind, you must bet at least the amount of the current stake or twice the current stake.
Seen Players
- If the player before you is seen, you must bet at least the current stake or twice its amount
- If the player before you is blind, you must bet at least twice the current take or four times its amount.
The betting of the players continues until any one of the following happens:
- If all players except one fold their cards, the last surviving player wins all the money in the pot
- If all except two players fold and one of the two players pays for show. In this case, the cards of both players are compared and the player with the better hand wins. If they both have the same hand, the player who did not ask for the show wins.
Hand Ranking
The game’s hand ranking is similar to that of poker’s where the Ace cards are the highest and the 2 cards are ranked the lowest. Here are the combinations ranked from highest to lowest:
- Trail or Trio. Also called the mother of all hands, this hand is a combination of three cards of the same rank. The highest of this is three of aces and the lowest is three of 2s.
- Pure sequence or straight flush. Three consecutive cards of the same suit.
- Sequence or straight. Three consecutive cards NOT all of the same suit.
- Color or flush. Three cards of the same suit but not consecutive.
- Pair or Two of a Kind. With two cards of the same rank. For example, two queens, two 7s, etc.
- High Card. The best high card hand is Ace, King, Jack of different suits and the worst is 5, 3, 2. In some variations of the game, 5, 3, 2 is considered the highest hand.
Slideshow
You can request a player next to you for a sideshow or compromise and once accepted, both players compare their cards privately and the player with the lower card has to fold.
Blind players may ask for a show at the amount of the current stake if the player before him is blind and half of the current stake if the player before him is seen.
Seen players may ask for a show at twice the current stake if the player before him is blind and at the price of the current stake if the player before him is seen.
Running Out of Money
Once a player ran out of money in the Indian Poker, the player may go all-in or fold their hand. If a player goes all-in, side pots are created and a winner or winners are determined. Side pots are separate from the main pot where not all players are entitled to win.
